School Days

Jean-Lou obtained his BA (Hons) from the University of the Arts London, which the QS World University Rankings considers one of the top two universities in the world for art and design. With the assistance of designer, typographer, and author Christian Küster of ACME Fonts, he created an experimental typeface called AF Kub. The font was featured in the renowned British magazine, Creative Review and is available for purchase from ACME Fonts, Type.co.uk, Myfonts and Font Factory.

Following its release, the project was chosen to be discussed at Typophile.com’s “First Critic Thursday” event.

Corporate World

Jean-Lou worked for Chichester’s Map & Guide of London, prior to undertaking freelance projects with Arch 468.

Then in Mauritius, he directed numerous branding projects at the design agency Contraste, under the late Daniel Koenig. The agency specializes in creating corporate identities, designing annual reports and producing hotel brochures.

In his first year at Contraste, all three logos nominated for the AAA Award were from the agency — a first. In 2008, Jean-Lou launched Ti’kuto Design Studio, whose output spans all media — from print to digital, including annual reports, books, and app design.

Ventures

Beyond design, Jean-Lou dedicates considerable time to social activities. Notably, in 2005, he co-founded a genuine social, artistic, and cultural organization named Jammers. This group of friends aimed to enrich lives through the arts. Moreover, Jean-Lou leads the translation project of the Bible into Mauritian Creole, under the aegis of TBS. In 2019, his preference for clean and balanced design inspired him to create two design tools that aid in page layout. Both tools, the Layout Grid Calculator and LGC Typographic Scale were well received by the design community and are considered by some as indispensable.
