School Days

Jean-Lou obtained his BA (Hons) at the University of Art in London (Camberwell College of Arts), considered one of the top two universities in the world for art and design by the QS World University Rankings. During his studies, with the help of designer, typographer and author Christian Küster of ACME Fonts, he created an experimental typeface called AF Kub. The font was featured in the renowned British magazine Creative Review and is available for purchase from ACME Fonts, Type.co.uk, Myfonts and Font Factory.

Consequently, upon its release, the project was chosen to be discussed at Typophile.com’s “First Critic Thursday” event.

Corporate World

Jean-Lou worked for Chichester’s Map & Guide of London, after that went freelance for Arch 468.

Then in Mauritius, he art directed many branding projects at design agency Contraste under the late Daniel Koenig. The design agency focused on creating corporate identitiesannual reports design and hotel brochures.

For his first year at Contraste, 3 of the 3 logos nominated for the AAA Award were from the agency. This was a first, and they obviously went on winning the prize. In 2008, Jean-Lou launched Ti’kuto Design Studio, whose output extends to all media — from print to digital; from annual reports, books to app design.

Ventures

In addition to design, Jean-Lou devotes a lot of time to social activities. Notably, in 2005, along with a few peers, he founded an authentic social, artistic and cultural organization called Jammers. This group of friends strives to enlighten people’s lives through the arts. Above of that, Jean-Lou leads the translation project of the Bible into Mauritian Creole, under the aegis of TBS. In 2019, his taste for clean and balanced design led him to create two design tools that help with page layout. Both tools, the Layout Grid Calculator and LGC Typographic Scale were well received by the design community and are considered by some as indispensable.
